A Long HISTORY OF SATISFIED CLIENTS

Adult Name Changes

We make the adult legal name change process as simple, fast, and complete as possible. We eliminate as much upfront legwork as we can. We continuously systematize and simplify our processes. And we constantly search for ways to make our client experience even better.

Adult Name Change Process

Step 1 - Free Consultation

The most important step toward your new name is to contact us. You can call, text, or email. We offer free telephone consultations and will answer any questions you have. You can then set an appointment. We see clients Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at our convenient office location.

Step 2 - Appointment with Attorney

At your appointment, you will discuss your name change with your attorney, who will put together the required documents. You will also be fingerprinted onsite as part of this process. If you have ever been charged with a crime above a Class C misdemeanor, you will need to work with your attorney and aid in locating your case information. At the end of your appointment, you will sign the required documents with our notary. After your appointment, your attorney will file the documents with the court and schedule your hearing.

Step 3 - Court Hearing

Once your attorney has filed the necessary court documents, you and your attorney will attend a name change hearing to present your case to the judge. You will be sworn in, and your attorney will guide you through questions about your case. Your attorney will then make any necessary arguments before the judge to further your case. (Note: When COVID-19 restrictions are in effect, a court appearance may not be required).

Step 4 - Updating Records

After the Court grants your name change, your attorney will obtain multiple certified copies of your court order. Your attorney will provide everything you need to update your Driver's License, Passport, and Social Security Card, and will instruct you on how to update other records. Some clients may wish to amend their birth certificates as well.

Reasons Our Clients Change Their Names

Whatever the reason for your name change, we can help make your desired name a reality.

Name Changes Following Divorce

Many of our adult clients decide to change their last name after a divorce. If a divorce decree does not explicitly change a name back to a maiden name, divorcees encounter problems when updating government IDs and records.

Names Don't Match Birth Certificate

Frequently, clients (often after a move from out-of-state) have problems obtaining a Texas Driver's License in their preferred name if it does not match their birth certificate. A legal name change will solve this problem. (Note: In some situations, an adoption order, naturalization certificate, or marriage license in your preferred name can be used instead.)

Use a Step- or Biological Parent's Surname

Some of our clients want to change their last name to the name of a step-parent or biological parent with whom they more closely identify. Client's often see this as a way to honor the person whose name they assume.

Religous or Cultural Reasons

Clients may choose to change their name for religious or cultural reasons. Some choose a name from the Bible or other Holy Book. Others choose a name that reflects their cultural background. Some prefer to Americanize their name.

Like A Different Name Better

Some of our clients simply don't like their name and want something else. Sometimes, it is because their name is frequently mispronounced or leads to teasing. Sometimes, the change celebrates a personal transformation or fresh start. Whatever the reason, we can discuss it with you and help the judge understand the reason for your name change.
