We can help you petition the court to legally change your child’s first name, middle name, and/or last name. The costs, complexity, and time required largely depends on whether the name change case is contested or uncontested. Another parent, guardian, or conservator may have the right to contest the proposed name change. In all cases, the Court’s goal is to make a decision that is in the best interest of your child. If your child is older than nine years old, the court will likely give a great deal of consideration to whether the child agrees with the proposed name change. Our goal is to help you put your best foot forward with the Court.
Once the Court grants an order legally changing your child’s name, we will assist with updating your child’s vital documents. Depending on your child’s age and circumstances, these documents may include your child’s social security card, passport, state identification card and/or driver’s license. We will also provide you with name change documentation that you can use to update your child’s name with schools, insurers, banks (if applicable), and more. In some circumstances, we will be able to update your child’s information without the need for any additional legwork on your part. In other cases, you will need to go the the applicable government entity in person to make the change. We will be happy to guide you through this process.
